A CVS Omicare pharmacy in Las Vegas has become the first location to join a new national pharmacy union, a milestone as organizers try to help thousands of U.S. pharmacy workers address what they call unsafe working conditions. Nearly 30 pharmacy staff at the Las Vegas branch of CVS's Omnicare won their union election on Thursday by a landslide margin of 87% to 13%. Those workers now join The Pharmacy Guild, which will represent them in labor negotiations with CVS. The Pharmacy Guild will now work to strike a union contract with CVS to address the concerns of Omnicare workers in Las Vegas. The Pharmacy Guild is seeing momentum build in other parts of the country.

New York CNN —Retail pharmacy workers have told CNN that their employers have left them severely overworked and understaffed. The grassroots organizers had difficulty organizing the large-scale walkout without institutional support, and failed to rally pharmacy workers on a significant level. A number of other US unions represent retail pharmacy workers. United Healthcare Workers East represents nearly 5,000 pharmacists and pharmacy techs in hospitals and retail pharmacies. The United Food and Commercial workers also represent retail pharmacy staff but do not share official membership numbers.

The organizers of a recent retail pharmacy staff walkout are helping to launch a national push to organize those employees on Wednesday, a potential step to wide-scale unionization of thousands of pharmacists and technicians across the U.S. for the first time. Both Walgreens and CVS also said last week that the walkout of their pharmacy staff last week had a minimal impact on their pharmacy operations. IAM Healthcare and the walkout organizers will then launch unionization campaigns in certain districts or areas with high support for organizing. The Pharmacy Guild hopes to get 100,000 pharmacists and technicians to fill out the form, Jerominski said. He also predicted that 90% of pharmacists working for Walgreens and CVS will be unionized in five years.

The walkout, which the organizers have dubbed "Pharmageddon", is the third strike by pharmacists in a little over one month. In September, some staff from CVS stores in Kansas City went on a two-day strike, while there was another by Walgreens store employees earlier this month. Pharmacy staff in New York and Pennsylvania were planning to participate, including workers at some of Walgreens' Duane Reade stores in New York, he said. Some pharmacists were also planning to conduct rallies outside CVS' headquarters at Woonsocket, Rhode Island and at Walgreens at Deerfield, Illinois, according to social media posts. "Our ongoing efforts are focused on how we recruit, retain, and reward our pharmacy staff," a spokesperson for Walgreens told Reuters, adding that they have also centralized some operations to reduce pharmacists' workload.

Walgreens and CVS employees are mostly not unionized, which makes a largescale walkout difficult to execute. Workers at Walgreens and CVS have previously staged walkouts in Arizona, Washington, Massachusetts and Oregon in September and early October. During prior walkouts, pharmacy staff feared retaliation from their bosses and corporate leadership, said Jerominski. A spokesperson from the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) told CNN on Sunday that it supports the organizers planning a walkout and protests. “UFCW members and staff have been communicating with many of the CVS and Walgreens workers who have been taking actions to stand up for their rights on the job.

Drugstore workers around the country started calling in sick Monday to highlight a lack of support from their employers, protest organizers said. She said organizers estimate that “at least hundreds” of pharmacists and technicians — mostly for Walgreens and other big retailers like CVS Health — were involved. Pharmacists say they have been dealing with difficult working conditions for years. Thibault said CVS Health is working to give its pharmacies room to schedule more staff. Ultimately, retail pharmacies need more staffing to avoid creating dangerous working conditions that lead to medication errors, Duong said.

New York CNN —Retail pharmacists and technicians around the country say they’re overworked, underpaid and fed up. Pharmacy staff at Walgreens locations across the country called out of work on Monday to protest harsh working conditions, leaving some stores closed or critically understaffed. Organizers told CNN that hundreds of workers participated in the organized action, which is expected to last through Wednesday. The walkouts come just two weeks after dozens of pharmacy employees at CVS, America’s largest retail pharmacy chain, walked off the job in Kansas City. Walgreens on Monday said it understands “the immense pressures felt across the US in retail pharmacy right now,” according to Fraser Engerman, senior director of external relations at Walgreens.
